Why does my GFCI trip every time I switch on my 3-way-controlled light?
In my living room, I have two sconces on the wall. These Light Fixtures are on the same circuit as the living room receptacles. The sconces are both controlled by two three-way switches, one near each doorway in the room. Both of these switches are of the backlit variety. After finding the first receptacle on the circuit, I wired in a GFCI (as per NEC) so I can replace the other 2-wire receptacles with grounding-type receptacles. The problem is that when I turn on either of the two 3-way switches controlling the sconces, the GFCI receptacle trips. If I plug a device into either the GFCI receptacle or any of the other receptacles on the circuit, they all work perfectly fine. What’s the problem here? I haven’t ripped out the 3-way switches to investigate any wiring issues; could this be the problem?
If you didn’t replace or alter the three way switches, there probably isn’t anything wrong with them.
As far as replacing an ungrounded receptacle with a GFCI, you are on the right track. Check your wiring on the GFCI.
There is a ‘LINE’ and a ‘LOAD’. Make sure that the hot wire (black) and it’s corresponding neutral (white) are terminated on the LINE side and the wiring to the next receptacle is on the LOAD side.It should be printed on the receptacle ‘HOT’ or ‘BLACK’ and ‘WHITE’ or ‘NEUTRAL’.
If either of the blacks or whites got crossed up, you’ll have problems with the GFCI tripping. A GFCI is built to isolate the line side neutral from the load side neutral. So if the wires are crossed, when you turn the lights on, it is possible for the GFCI to see an unbalanced current.
Contrary to other comments, a GFCI will only trip when there is an unbalanced current flow on the white (neutral) wire. Not the ground.
