What voltage does the phone line draw in the UK on and off the hook?
In the USA, when you take the phone line off the hook it draws around 50 – 54 volts DC. Is this the same as the UK telephone system?
If not, what are the on hook and off hook voltages drawn from the telephone line in the UK?
The voltages used in telephone systems around the world are effectively standardised.
Official voltage = “-48v” and that is what it is meant to be
But as that originates from 4 off 12v Lead Acid cells… in the exchange (still to day for power cuts) in reality thats 4 x 13.8 (fully charged) = 56 v or so.
What does change between countries is the volume of the audio on the line.. and the frequency equaliztion. The US and Europe/rest of the world differ in using μ-law (Mu Law) and the other .A-Law (europe) fortuneately they are as good as the same but do have an incompatibilty.
