What happens when you break open a plasma ball?
You know, one of those novelty items you buy from a gift store that has a clear globe at the top. When the device is turned on, those purple lights come outward. I know there’s gas inside, so I would figure that the gas would simply escape, and then poof, no more plasma, but what about the ball left in the middle? Does it still give off electricity? If I touch it, would it electrocute me?
I have a much older plasma ball, one made in 1987. It has a glass globe. I’m not sure if the ones made these days have plastic or not.
Plasma balls have an inert gas in them and the center ball discharges a high frequency, high voltage AC current through the gas in the ball. I wouldn’t suggest breaking the ball open because the gas may be toxic, and I don’t think you want several thousand volts coursing through your body when you touch the electrode.
They are essentially a capacitor, and if you’ve ever touched a small capacitor, you know it doesn’t feel good to have one discharge in your finger.
