Is my light bulb powerful enough for aquarium plants requiring “Moderate Lighting?”?
I have a 20 Gallon fish tank with an 18 in bulb of 15watts, is it powerful enough to sustain plants requiring 2 watts per gallon. I can’t find any 18” bulbs with higher watts, so if i want a higher wattage per gallon what do i do?
It is minimally adequate depending upon what type of Fluorescent Bulb you have installed. What is needed is warm white, or bulbs designed for plant growth (rich in blues and reds). If you check at a hardware store or even a pet shop, look for “plant lights” or lamps that simulate natural sunlight. If you can find a hood that has two lamps installed it will help.
Other factors beyond the light is sufficient carbon dioxide and the material in which the plants are rooted. There are CO2 generators that you can get from a pet shop. Some shops carry planting media specifically for aquatic plants.
There are more powerful lamps available but they are expensive and generate quite a lot of heat. Drs. Foster and Smith have a web page with all types of Light Fixtures available. You might also try aquatic ferns such as Java fern that can grow in subdued light.
