We replaced an outlet and then discovered that the wall sconce nearby no longer works with its switch. ?
It sounded like we needed to break the tab, as we read some other posts. We broke the tab on the hot side (gold screws), and this did not fix it. So we broke the other tab and now the light is no longer on at all. (It was always hot and we were dealing with it by unscrewing the bulb). Any ideas?
Breaking the tab is done to separate the top and bottom plugs on a duplex receptacle so that they can be wired separately, i.e: one on a switch, one always hot. If the sconce was not plugged into the outlet, this would not be the way to do it. Also, if the outlet and light are all on one circuit, then you don’t want to break the neutral tab. The brass side, where the black wires go, would have the tab broken if: 1 outlet will be connected to the black wire coming back from the switch, and 1 outlet will be connected to the line (hot black wire). What often happens, is that people don’t realize the switch is just a break in the path of the electricity, and uses a black and white wire, even though the white wire is no longer a neutral. New code says you have to re-color the white wire, but in the ‘old days’ they often didn’t do that. SO, if the black wire that goes off to the switch is hooked under a wire nut to the line (hot black), then the white wire coming back gets hooked to the BRASS screw on one half of the outlet. It would help you understand this if you wrap a piece of red or black vinyl tape around that white wire (make sure you identify it correctly first). Then, a wire from the line (hot black) wire nut hooks up to the other brass screw on the outlet. If you already broke the silver tab, you will need a small wire jumper that hooks both silver screws together again.
If your switch/light are hardwired, and just pass through this outlet box, then it is likely that you have unhooked either a black or white wire supplying it from under some wire nuts by accident. This often happens taking apart old wiring just from the bending and jiggling of wires, if the nuts aren’t on tight. If you are using the outlet’s screws themselves to hook all the wires together, and this pass-through situation is what you have, then breaking the tab is what disconnected them in the first place. Get a new outlet and don’t break the tab, or use a jumper on both the brass and silver sides.
