Is it possible to paint nickel Light Fixtures?
I have nickel light fixtures in my bathroom & the humidity caused them to rust in certain areas. Can I paint them? I would like to finish them in nickel again, if I can’t, what type of paint can I use?
yes it’s possible but you will need to spend some time on preparation.
Go to Lowes or a similar place and get some steel wool, found in the paint section. This comes in 8 different grades and you will need the one labeled, #000. This can also be used on chrome and glass so it is a very fine mesh. Use this to remove the rust that you have accumulated on the fixtures and scour the whole fixture with these pads Don’t worry about hurting the finish, you actually want to produce slight scratches and grooves in the metal so that the primer has a surface to adhere to.
I would brush on a good quality primer and allow to dry well.
Then I would use an aerosol paint made for engines which you can find in a hardware store. Might cost a couple of dollars more than the cheap paint on the shelf, but this paint is formulated to withstand moisture and high heat. Put two thin light coats on the fixture, allowing some drying time in between each coat. Should take care of your problem. If you really want to take care of the future problems, you can also apply a thin coat of car wax after the second coat of paint has dried.
