If light passes through glass, does the frequency or wavelength change?
I understand that glass has a refractive index which causes the light to slow down. Since the velocity is decreased, v = f × λ means that either wavelength or frequency must decrease as well.
I’m thinking it’s the frequency, but I’m not sure…
Thanks for the help! Since colors of light are usually classified by wavelength, I though that changing the wavelength would change the color.
It is wavelength that changes with optically dense media. This is what you observe in typical diagrams of refraction. It is really a misnomer to say that the wavelength of red light is 700 nanometers, what they really mean is its vacuum wavelength is 700 nanometers.
Frequency always remains unchanged, because it would be a big problem for the principle of causality if it did change.
Why colors are often referenced by the wavelength is quite a mystery to me. It is likely due to the fact that wavelength is more easily measured, via diffraction methods. What one answerer said when I asked this question is that Maxwell’s equations were originally solved to return wavelength, such that the math would be easier.
Either way, I find neither of these to be valid excuses for such ill-defined data to be presented. Even if it is easier to measure or calculate wavelength in a vacuum or air, convert it back to frequency when presenting your literature values, or at least properly state the medium.
