Chavez wins his election by a wide margin. Did he rely on Diebold?
CARACAS, Venezuela – President Hugo Chavez led by a wide margin Sunday, according to partial results for his bid to win another six-year term to solidify his self-styled social revolution and further his global campaign to counter U.S. influence.
Not exactly.
But, Sequoia Voting Systems is owned by Smartmatic Corp, which is mostly owned by 3 Venezuelan individuals and their families.
According to Smartmatic, the company is owned primarily by three individuals and their families: Antonio Mugica, a dual-Spanish-Venezuelan national who is the chief executive officer (78.8 percent); Alfredo Anzola (3.9 percent); and Roger Pinate (8.5 percent). Investor Jorge Massa as well as Smartmatic employees and other friends own the remainder.
However, the company maintains that it is not owned by the government of Venezuela.
