How would i make a glass or plastic light sconce (please read description)?
I want to have a sheet of Frosted Glass or plastic that would be around 62 inches long and 3 feet tall. and i want different colored light bulbs that would fade in and out when i turn them on. but how would i do that? how would i mount them to the wall. And if i use glass how do i cut holes in it. i need options!!
I’m not sure I understand you correctly, since it sounds like what you want wouldn’t need holes cut. That said, frosted plastic is easy. They sell Plexiglas sheets already frosted. If you don’t want the sort of uniformity or opacity they provide off-the-shelf, you could use sandpaper of different coarseness’ to create the frosting effect. Put that on the wall side of the plastic and you will have something that is still smooth to the touch outside (and probably easier to clean as a result). For glass, you can use the same approach or you can use chemical etching (with Hydrofluoric acid, or with crafting etch compound that is usually sold as a paste of the same stuff).
As far as cutting holes in glass, glass workers have a tool that is basically a suction cup and a compass with an etching point on it. Tap around the etched circle until the crack goes through and then tap out.
For the light bulbs, that’s a different story. If you’re just wanting something to be able to manually fade them in/out, that’s fairly straightforward. If you want something to fade in & out automatically, that’s another ballgame entirely. I’d recommend using incadescent bulbs and a triac that you could drive with an opto-isolator for each color set. Hook the opto-isolator up to a pulse-width modulator driven by a triangle-wave generator and you’ve got it done. The triangle-wave generator can be made with 741 op-amps. If all the last stuff is Greek to you, try contacting a local university and explaining the project to a professor. One of their sutdents can probably hook you up.
