One part of home improvement is changing or installing new Light Fixtures. Although this is a relatively simple process, there are a few important tips to keep in mind. You can make the process of changing light fixtures much easier, and also safer for you.
An essential part of safety is making sure you purchase the correct size. Depending upon the particular type of fixture you are buying, and whether you are replacing an old one or installing something new, you need to know that it will fit properly. This means you need to measure the space where you plan to locate it so that the fixture will not come in contact with the wall or cabinets; and, if you are replacing an existing light fixture, be sure that the size of the new one is adaptable to any wiring or other parts you plan to use.
The best and safest way to go about changing a light fixture involves shutting off your power source. In general, but especially if you are dealing with existing wiring, shutting off the power will eliminate your risk of an electrical shock. While changing fixtures in good lighting makes the process easier, never try to use a light bulb in the fixture you are changing. This is extremely dangerous.
Even if you have your power source turned off, dryness is a safety factor. This means you should make sure that your hands are completely dry, and there is no wetness or moisture in the area where you plan to change or install the fixture. Not only does this make the process safer, it also reduces your risk of the fixture slipping when you are installing it.
Making sure the area you are in while changing the fixture is free of clutter is also important. It is not a good idea to place a ladder on a rug which can slip, or use a step ladder until you have checked it to be sure it is both sturdy and steady.
If changing or installing the light fixture requires the use of tools, check them in advance to be sure they are clean, dry, and free of rust. It will be easier and safer to get the job done when your hand tools are in good condition.
